Harvest Lunches Celebrate Healthy Eating at School

It’s harvest time in many school gardens! With an abundance of fresh vegetables ready to eat, some schools are organizing Harvest Lunches where students and staff enjoy a meal together. Prepared with the help of local chefs, these meals offer students the chance to try new foods and learn about cooking with fresh, local and healthy ingredients.

Dr. Arthur Hines School held its Harvest Lunch earlier in October. With guidance of Chef Velden from the Flying Apron, students washed, peeled and chopped fresh vegetables from the school garden for a healthy meal for everyone at the school.

Likewise, the students and staff of Somerset and District Elementary enjoyed a veggie pasta at their Harvest Lunch on October 18, prepared by Grade 5 students thanks to expert help from Sean Peori and Jenny Osburn, chef and cookbook author. Superintendent of Schools Roberta Kubik and Donna Johnstone, Board Member for Somerset and District Elementary, were honoured to join students and staff at the Harvest Lunch.

The Hants Shore Community Health Centre funded two summer post-secondary student positions to help this school garden keep growing over the summer.
