January 2017: West Kings Start Time Public Consultation
In January, several public consultation sessions on school start times will take place in the West Kings District High School Family of Schools (Berwick and District School, Dwight Ross School, Kingston and District School, Pine Ridge Middle School, St. Mary's Elementary School and West Kings District High School).
These public consultations are part of a process that began with long range reviews of school facilities in 2010, followed by a long range planning process called Successful Schools for Successful Students in 2012. Recommendation seven in the Successful Schools for Successful Students report called for “additional study of the research in support of the educational rationale to switch the start times for West Kings District High School and its feeder schools, including an examination of the transportation implications of making this change.”
Between October 2015 and May 2016, the Board reviewed expert input and academic research on adolescent sleep patterns. It also initiated a process to determine if a later start time for West Kings District High School can be achieved, which included a proposed Transportation Plan.
At the June 15, 2016 Regular Board Meeting, the Board directed AVRSB staff to develop a community feedback process to share information and receive input from school community members in the West Kings District High School family of schools.
The upcoming January 2017 public consultations are a key part of this community feedback process, and all school community members are welcome to take part.
AVRSB is also collecting input through an online survey. School community members are welcome to share their input at https://www.avrsb.ca/wkdhs-start-times-survey. The survey will be open until February 15, 2017. After this, all information received will be consolidated to share with governing Board members.
