MRHS Student Recognized for African Heritage Essay

Congratulations to Rachel Holland, a grade 12 Middleton Regional High School student, on receiving one of 30 scholarships in a recent national African Heritage Month essay competition. Rachel’s essay, Building Better Futures, highlights the courage of Anderson Ruffin Abbott and Leonard Braithwaite in challenging racism, while noting its persistence in Canada. Click here to view Rachel’s award-winning essay.

Abbott was the first Canadian-born medical doctor of African descent, serving as a military surgeon during the American Civil War. Braithwaite graduated from the University of Toronto’s Osgoode Hall Law School in 1958, and played a key role in ending racial segregation of Ontario’s public schools.
